I just might take your advice Calltrex. I have some wiring to do on my bike anyway, so I will rig something up for lights. But that is real BS what they are trying to do to.

Disclaimer: I AM NOT A LAWYER! I could be wrong, but this is the way I think it is.
First off, if it's bolted to the bike it is not a trailer - it is part of the vehicle. SGI is full of crap.
That said, it could mean trouble for you if you're ever in an accident. Whether the trailer had anything to do with the accident or not probably wouldn't matter - if SGI figures you're driving an illegal vehicle they can refuse to cover you. This means if you hurt someone that person could sue you directly for costs and you could have pay garnished - possibly for the rest of your life even depending on the injury (and the lawyer!). If you hurt yourself all that income replacement that you're paying a stupid amount of money for on your plates might not help you at all.
I think that's a worst-case scenario and the odds of that happening are very small, but you or anyone who rides a bike that may not be completely legal should be aware of that - it's a steep price to pay!
You should be able to contact SGI and have them direct you to their people who deal with custom or unusual vehicle plating - if they can verify that it's OK and you can get a signed letter to that effect you should be fine from a legal standpoint.
If you're willing to take the chance that nothing will happen (most likely) then by all means ride it the way it is. I don't recommend that, but it's your decision.

Good luck trying to find someone in SGI to make a decision that is not clearly written in a book somewhere. I still cannot convince them that my V Strom is a dual sport not a sport bike.

Thanks for that info, I will dig a little deeper into this and try to get it changed. Good to have this reference that the change has been made before.

Okay I need to give SGI some credit this time. Last year they simlpy said my V Strom was rated as a sportbike and that could not be changed. Today I went in to get some contact info for a manager I could talk to and the nice young lady simply said "oh I can change that for you right on my screen". So changing from sportbike to dual sport with the click of the mouse saved me approx $400 for a year. Things do change with time I guess.
