We worked with headsets back in about '06 and '07 for a while in the ADSMC. We were using the Cobra radios though, so we had way more range, and they still weren't very good. Over about 80 km/h things became unintelligible, and even though the radios said they had a range of 20 miles the actual range was short enough that when we spaced out for dust we would lose contact with each other. I think the Senas have shorter range than those Cobra radios did too.

Where they are great is when you stop and want to talk briefly with the motor running and your helmet on. Then you can hear each other clearly, and you don't have to pull up right beside each other to talk (you can be 15 or 20 feet away or more). At city traffic lights or at forks in the trail they worked well. They're not bad riding around the city either - speeds were low enough and you were usually close enough together that you could understand people talking into the mics. On the trail in a place like Nisbet or PLP they would probably work OK.

Maybe the technology is better now, but I suspect most of the improvements are in the size and connectivity.

As for the setup Ken posted for the Hero 3, it looks pretty darn good. If the speeds are lower (<80 km/h) I bet it would work great!

One thing that worked well for a group ride was the Garmin Rino GPS units with 2-way radio. I was leading a group of about 9 riders from Calgary to the Cypress Hills cross-country (TCAT now). I had a Rino and my buddy riding at the back of the group had a Rino. Every few minutes we would each hit the transmit button to transmit our position to the other guy. Because I was at the front and he was at the back, we could both clearly see on the map whether the group was fairly spread out or was bunched closer together. That made it easy for me to set my speed to make sure the group stayed together. It actually worked pretty well, but once in a while we were out of range so I wasn't sure where he was.

Jen and I have the SMH10S http://www.revzilla.com/motorcycle/sena ... -dual-pack, I think something crazy like 16 can be group linked. Pretty good, nice battery life, I've taken phone calls while riding and called home using siri voice command, you can jog your music tracks too with the big easy to grab jog wheel. Also seems to take a lot of bashing without complaint.

Just don't get the ones with the helmet speakers, get the ones that you can plug your own earphones into. At high speeds you just can't hear the speakers it seems as wind noise isn't isolated like an earpiece would. Maybe if you have an expensive and quiet street helmet.

Only thing that is annoying is that is there is a solid object between you the radio intercom does not work. So if you up and down in steep hills you will keep losing comms with the other person. I guess you could get around that by just using some sort of voip over 3g.

Anyway I feel it was a great buy, thinking about buying another 2 pack for the kids helmets.

Yeah, Canadian models of GMRS radios don't require a license to operate, but are limited to 2 watts transmitting power. US models require a license, but have 5 watts.

Best to go to the US to buy a Rino and bring it back rather than buy it here. Not like anyone's going to care about 2 watts versus 5 watts around here anyway.
