I have a set of Klipsch earbuds that I use - they seal into your ears and block out a lot of the background noise. I've never had any issues with them hurting me in a crash, and I've had a few doozies like the one in this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JJhr__6 ... mQ&index=2

I can't see them hurting me if they got ripped from my ears, but they could hurt (maybe) if I took a hard side impact on the helmet and the earbud got pushed into my ear further.

If you don't have the in-ear earbuds the background noise will make it very hard to hear your music properly. Even standard earbuds like the ones that come with the iPhone don't work that well. You'll end up having to turn the music up really loud and that'll do a lot of damage to your hearing. The only non-earbud option is to go with in-helmet headphones and then wear earplugs and turn the volume up really high. This works OK for 2-way radio communication, but the sound quality isn't great for music.

I've crashed the DS, Dirtbike and Sled numerous times with the player in my jacket and my ears are about the only thing I haven't injured.

On the FJR they are plugged in to a Mix-it on the dash for radar, gps, Sat. Radio and MP3, and although I have yet to crash-test this set up I am confident the very small wire (usually run through my jacket) would break long before the ear buds could do any damage.

While Marshaling at the TT on the Isle of Man last year we had an E.R. Doctor sit with us.
He rides a Beemer and he made it clear to remove all watch's rings jewelry bracelets and ear buds of any kind before going for a ride.

Many years ago we were just screwing around and I saw a buddy strip the meat off his finger with his wedding ring when it caught on a cleat on the bow of a boat. (like eating a chicken wing)
We found it floating in the lake and took it and him into Emergency. The Doctor looked at it, and took out a pair of side-cutters and snipped off the bone sticking out of his hand. ------ I haven't worn any jewelery since.
I have heard of people injured from a back-pack while crashing a street bike, but at some point we have to just consider some things to be an acceptable risk or we will never leave the house.

He had seen more fingers and hands dismembered from Rings and watches etc.
I now remove all when I go riding.

About the music.
I wear ear plugs and just simply sing to myself when I'm on the bike.

And carry my mp3 for relaxing after the ride.
I then sing even better.

I guess the thread is slightly derailed with the earbuds thing but these are really great sounding, isolate noise well and have cables that detach AT the earbud that might help negate them being ripped out. I love mine! They're the Shure SE215 and they're around $100. Got mine at a London style drug store
