I too have a few different "bear deterrents" you could borrow if you didn't want to use more traditionally methods

Pretty sure a remington 870 pump with pistol grip and tactical folding stock or Mossberg 500 would be about smallest form factor legally you can get. Problem is, I'm not sure if I would feel comfortable having one loaded with me and small kids in the tent. Maybe if you kept the shells separate in your pocket.
Generally if a black bear is physically attacking it's because it wants to eat you, at least that's my understanding.

That's pretty scary shit that happened to your family!
The problem with a shotgun or other fire arm in a campsite is you may harm someone else's family or even your own .
I suspect you may have a hard time getting your kids back into a tent?
What did you do to get the bear to leave?

Just curious if you had anything in the tent that you think may have attracted the bear besides all the fresh white meat?
