The 690 is really a bike without a proper home. It's a dirtbike (narrow seat, small fuel tank, etc) but it's really too heavy to be a dirtbike, and not maneuverable enough to have fun on tight trails. If they could just make it with a bigger tank and more comfortable seat it'd be an excellent adventure bike. They don't have to do all the other crap - you can get aftermarket fairings and stuff if you want a rally bike. I agree that the pipe under the frame is a bad idea - if you're going to do that it's a road bike, in my opinion. Gravel road maybe, but still a road bike.
On the flip side, if Kawasaki made a KLR650 with as much power and suspension performance as the 690 I'd buy one in a heartbeat...

I don't think the low pipe position is really that big of a deal. If you have a good skid plate it's not that bad. Keep in mind that this isn't supposed to be a dirtbike. It's more rally inspired. Look at any of the ktm rally bikes over the last decade or so. They all have pipes that go below the frame. I definitely wouldn't classify those machines as road bikes.

The KTM 1190 Adventure R has a pipe that goes under the frame as well. I think this bike is supposed to be a mini adventure for doing longer trips and medium offroad stuff... It's probably going to be pretty heavy with the bigger tanks, fairing and reinforced sub frame so jumping creeks and logs and boulders will only be for the nutters. I'm guessing it will be close to the weight of the BMW 800GS (which incidentally also has a pipe that goes under the frame) and will be positioned next to the 800GS much like the big KTM adventure is against the R1200GS - same class but lighter, better offroad and... well, orange

I shouldn't say under the frame... both the 690 and 1190 have frames with the engine hanging below. The pipe is under the engine.
Anyway, this prototype has the pipe directly underneath everything. They'll probably tuck it into the bottom right side so its flush with the bottom of the case for the final version.

What you say about the pipe has some merit, Ken, but if I want a bike like that I'll go for a twin over the 690 single. KTM will be missing the boat if they sling the pipe underneath on the 690.
The awesome thing about the 690 is that it has good highway power and can go places that the F800 can't go due to it's weight and design. KTM should look at keeping it that way, but making it more of an adventure platform. Then they'll have a huge advantage over the competition - and essentially their own market niche.
They should do the same with a 390 too. Small and light for when the going gets rough, but still OK as a long distance backroads touring machine.
