SGI made a 60 million profit last year, so when are our fees going to be reduced? I challenge them to show us some current financials that proves that motorcyclists don't pay their own way.

And not only are they fleecing us they are effectively killing sales at dealerships, I'm sure 27% less is a huge blow at a place like FFUN or Honda Powerhouse. it's not the economy since regs are up in Alberta.

I'm actually fine with the graduated licencing other than them making potential learners trailer their bike to SGI and then you are supposed to show them you can ride it. Leap of logic there. But them pretending to lower rates by slashing coverage (i.e. tort ) is disingenuous to the max. x( x( x( x( x( x(

Bikers don't pay for themselves - the average SGI payout for a car accident is $27K but the average for an accident involving a motorcycle is $156K! Out of that $141K is medical on average, paid out for things like surgeries, rehabilitation, replacement of income while off work, etc. This is part of the reason I pushed to force people to wear proper gear when I was on the motorcycle review committee. Why should we pay for the idiots who ride in shorts and tee-shirts?

This all came about because SGI got better software somewhere around 2009, and that allowed them to break down their accident statistics a lot more ways than they used to be able to. But now they are also separating the vehicle types in more ways, and therefore they found out that motorcyclists weren't paying nearly as much in registration as SGI was paying out for motorcycle collisions.

The news had cage-drivers all up-in-arms talking about how they shouldn't have to pay extra on their insurance to cover motorcyclists. The fact of the matter is that we are having our rates jacked up to save the average car driver $6 per year on their insurance - that's the amount that the car drivers were "subsidizing" us motorcyclists. Why even bother - it's ridiculous. The whole point of insurance is to spread out the risk. Technically I'm paying into SGI to cover all the people who had accidents - by that same logic why should I pay for them?

SGI should spread the costs for all private vehicle classes out over the complete group of private vehicles, instead of separating motorcycles out. It has almost zero impact on automobile drivers, and they could price motorcycle insurance in such a way as to generate a healthy motorcycle industry in Saskatchewan.

Rates are bad in Manitoba too, and I think it's going up in BC. When I lived in Calgary I paid $287 per year for my new KLR, and that included fire and theft. But it's all private insurance there.

SGI had stats showing that over half of motorcycle accidents included riders who had been riding 3 years or less. Your odds dropped dramatically with experience - someone who has been riding 20 years has a very small chance of a collision. That's where all the graduated licensing came from - restrict riders for the first 3 years while they get through that period.

You can kill yourself on a 250 for sure, but you can't do 170 km/h down Idylwyld with one. Put inexperience and high horsepower together and chances of a serious collision go up quickly. Add any alcohol and things get even worse. Then if you throw in a lack of proper protection things get really expensive too. I really wanted to get restrictions on horsepower for inexperienced riders, but SGI thought it would be difficult to define horsepower ratings for different models. Never mind that the UK has been doing this for a while, and most new FI bikes allow the dealer to reduce the power for a newer rider (down to 47 bhp usually, or roughly the power of a KLR).
