Well done SGI! How much money did you waste on this stupid venture?
Here's a letter from SGI to a participant of the telematics pilot program.
April 17, 2015
Dear Motorcycle Pilot Participant:
Spring is here and riders are excited to be back on their motorcycles. Many riders have inquired about SGI’s motorcycle telematics pilot program for this year. The pilot will not be continuing into the 2015 riding season.
SGI believes telematics to be a valuable tool for measuring driving behaviours and contributing to safer driving. There is a future for a program of this nature within the insurance industry and SGI continues to explore options.
The pilot helped SGI identify some challenges, unique to motorcycles, with the existing telematics technology. There is a reason that SGI is one of the first insurers to look at telematics for motorcycles. We have experienced first hand how telematics technology works well and seamlessly for vehicles; however, it does not yet work as seamlessly with motorcycles. Your participation, contributions, and feedback were critical in learning and understanding these challenges and understanding what is needed for a successful motorcycle telematics program in the future.
Telematics technology is evolving rapidly and new devices are currently being developed that are expected to meet SGI's needs for a future motorcycle program. These devices are not currently available, but when they are, SGI will consider revisiting the motorcycle telematics program.
If you wish to have the telematics device removed from your motorcycle, you can do so at SGI's expense by scheduling an appointment through an approved dealer. The dealer will record the removal, return the device to us and be reimbursed by SGI directly. There is no out-of-pocket expense to you. A list of approved dealers is provided on the next page.
Thank you for your assistance with this pilot, and we hope that you will support us in any future telematics programs or pilots we may offer.
